Increasing Victim Safety through Offender Accountability

Increasing Victim Safety through Offender Accountability, Room: Oklahoma J

Wednesday - September 12, 2018: 3:15 p.m. - 4:45 p.m.

This workshop examines what is currently done in Oklahoma regarding victim safety by looking at how offenders are held accountable. This includes looking at the language around domestic violence and how quickly the abuser disappears from the conversation; types of charges abusers can face and how much responsibility still falls on the victim for the prosecution of the abuser. The workshop provides a brief overview of the Attorney General Certified Batterers Intervention Programs. We then take participants through how domestic violence courts work and why they are successful. Abusers are held accountable with certain, predictable and rapidly applied sanctions for failing to comply.
